This book was almost 5 stars for me until I reached the wacky advice on alcohol consumption, "drinking responsibly" which brought it down to 4 stars.

First I'll say the recipes are great, the layout and design of the book is nice and fits the "student" aesthetic with the variable backgrounds of bulletin board, sticky notes, paper-clipped notes, graph paper, etc. It was visually appealing without being intrusive.

Ok so the alcohol section, though short (just a few pages) is a bit strange.

This is a cookbook aimed at students but the alcohol section mentions that since the drinking age is 21 in most of the US, most students can't drink until their senior year. But there are still alcohol recipes... I'm a bit confused about the disclaimer. Is the "wink wink" implication that you'll make the tequila sunrise ice pops way before your senior year? Or is it seriously implying you should wait until your senior year to make them? It's not really clear.

Now the stranger part of the alcohol section: "drinking responsibly" (page 240).

One of the pieces of advice for getting over a hangover is to have a big breakfast:
"There's a good reason why people dig into bacon and eggs when they're feeling the after effects of a night on the town. Eggs contain an amino acid that can help to rid your body of toxins, while the fat and salt will replace vital minerals".

Suggesting to eat bacon and eggs to replace vital minerals is kind of weird in a vegetarian cookbook! The writers didn't think to suggest a vegetarian food to help with hangovers, in a vegetarian cookbook for vegetarian students?

Then advice for getting over being drunk:
"If you spend your taxi or bus money in the bar and end up having to walk home, you could actually be doing your hangover a favor. A brisk walk before you crash out in bed can help to start removing the alcohol from your system and you'll begin to sober up on the walk home."

Telling college students who are away from home for the first time to walk home drunk instead of taking a taxi? Lol what? This is terrible advice! The "drinking responsibly" section indirectly condones using your taxi money on alcohol, cause it might force you to walk. This advice is pretty wacky! I also find it funny to assume college students are spending money at bars and not getting drunk for free at college parties. I think the writers are out of touch with this part of student life.

So, great vegetarian recipes and tips in most of the book. Then a few pages of advice for vegetarian students to walk home drunk at night and eat bacon in the morning. Ehhhh

It evens out to 4 stars.

As a cookbook it's OK, but as a student cookbook it's not.

Most of the recipes are for four people, you buy a student cookbook to cook for one not for the whole halls. Most of the recipes have a lot of ingredients, fine for a family home, not for a poorly stocked student kitchen. The meals are not overly complicated. The pictures are good and the book is a nice size. Recommend for groups of adults cooking together or families who want veggie recipes.

Haven't tried the recipes yet BUT having a mediocre amount of knowledge about what'll taste good together (obviously based on personal preference and practice) I'd say this is a perfect first cookbook for anyone whose either just starting out as an at-home cook AND OR someone transitioning diets.
